# Floor saw: the right blade matters more than the machine > Text version for AI agents of the article: https://www.amesworldwide.com/blogs/il-tecnico-ames/tagliasuolo-disco-giusto-asfalto-cemento - **Blog:** [The AMES technician](https://www.amesworldwide.com/blogs/il-tecnico-ames) - **Author:** Tecnico AMES - **Published:** 2026-09-16 - **Updated:** 2026-09-17 - **Image:** https://www.amesworldwide.com/cdn/shop/articles/Macchinari_per_il_Taglio_dell_Asfalto_e_del_Cemento.jpg?v=1789576049&width=1200 “The blade was new and after thirty metres of asphalt there was nothing left of it.” When people bring me the worn blade, the first thing I look at is the specification: almost always it is a blade for **cured concrete** fitted to a machine that cuts asphalt. It is not faulty, it is wrong for the job. ## Abrasive material, hard bond: the blade is chosen the other way round It sounds counterintuitive, but that is how it works. The diamond segment is made of diamonds held together by a bond. On an **abrasive, soft** material such as asphalt or fresh concrete the bond is eaten away quickly, so you need a blade with a **hard bond** that holds on to the diamonds. On a material that is **hard and not very abrasive**, such as cured concrete with hard aggregates, you need the opposite: a softer bond that wears just enough to expose new diamonds. That is why in the collection you will find joint-cutting blades divided into asphalt, fresh concrete and cured concrete. ## Water is not optional On the floor saw the water cools the segment and carries away the cutting slurry. I often see tanks empty halfway through the job and the cutting carrying on regardless: the blade heats up, the segment **glazes** and stops cutting, or worse, comes off. If the blade starts to “slide” and the feed slows down, check the water before pushing harder. ## Depth and passes The usable depth depends on the blade diameter and the machine, and the diameter depends on the power: you don't fit a bigger blade to go deeper. On deep cuts it pays to **make several passes** rather than plunging in all at once, especially in reinforced concrete. And the feed must be steady: if the engine speed drops, you are going too fast. Electric, petrol or diesel is chosen according to where you work: in a closed shed the exhaust fumes are a problem, on the road there is often no power socket nearby for an electric one. ## Joint cutters on screeds On an industrial floor the joint has to be cut **when the concrete bears the weight of the machine without ravelling**, but before it starts to crack on its own. Wait too long and you find the crack already formed ten centimetres from the cut. It is a window that depends on the pour and the temperature: whoever lays the floor knows it, and the machine must be ready. ## When you need scarifying instead If you have to remove a layer, roughen the surface for a new topping or remove road markings and resins, the blade is no use: you need the **scarifier** or the bush hammer, with cutters or grinding wheels chosen for the job, light, medium or heavy. Fitting heavy scarifying cutters to remove a paint means ruining the substrate. ## What I need to know - **What you are cutting**: asphalt, fresh concrete, cured concrete, reinforced. - **How many metres** and to what **depth**. - **Where you work**: road, closed shed, site without power. - Whether you need to **cut or scarify**, and what surface you want to achieve. --- ## We keep these in the shop A few items from the range we stock. If you cannot find the size or model you need, just ask: what you see online is only part of what we can source for you. - [Diamond blade for joint cutter, cured concrete Rubi](https://www.amesworldwide.com/products/disco-diamantato-segatrice-tagliagiunti-cemento-stagionato-segmentato-sjva) — Rubi - [Diamond blade for joint cutter, fresh concrete Rubi](https://www.amesworldwide.com/products/disco-diamantato-segatrice-tagliagiunti-cemento-fresco-segmentato-sjv) — Rubi - [Segmented diamond blade for joint cutter, asphalt, SJN Rubi](https://www.amesworldwide.com/products/disco-diamantato-segatrice-tagliagiunti-asfalto-segmentato-sjn) — Rubi - [Asphalt cutter Unimec FG2435MS](https://www.amesworldwide.com/products/unimec-tagliasfalto-fg2435ms) — Unimec - [Joist cutting Dieci Sea Technology](https://www.amesworldwide.com/products/sea-taglio-travetti-dieci) — Sea Technology - [Precast cutting Dieci Sea Technology](https://www.amesworldwide.com/products/sea-taglio-prefabbricato-dieci) — Sea Technology [Browse the whole category: Asphalt and Concrete Cutting and Scarifying Machines](https://www.amesworldwide.com/collections/macchinari-per-il-taglio-e-la-scarificazione-dell-asfalto-e-del-cemento) **Tell me what you need to do and I will reply myself.** You do not need to know the model already: describe the job, the material and how many hours a day, and I will suggest two or three solutions with a quotation.
