How to choose a mortar mixer: single-phase or three-phase
For small quantities of mortar, plaster or adhesive a small site mixer is enough, like the M25 models of the Maltech series; for bricklayers and crews who mix all day you move up to the M40, M60 models or the pan mixers. The choice depends on how much you mix and on the power supply you have on site: the mixers are available in single-phase 230 V and three-phase 400 V versions.
The types
- Site mixers: machines for mortars, plasters and premixes. They are the Maltech series, like the M25 230 V mixers, the M25 400 V and the M40 and M60 models.
- Polymix mixers: Polymix 40 and 60 models, with a dedicated data sheet.
- Planetary mixers: the paddle rotates and moves around the bowl, so it mixes evenly.
- Silo mixers: the Silostar M, to be connected to the premix silo.
- Pan mixers: for mortar and concrete, like the Compact pan mixer by Officine Polieri or the Unimec models.
- Continuous-cycle mixers: like the Roto 18, for working without interrupting the flow.
- Mixer stands: to position the machine stably.
How to choose by job
| Use | What to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small renovation | M25 single-phase 230 V mixer | Plugs into an ordinary site socket |
| Site with three-phase supply | M25 400 V, or M40 and M60 (check the voltage on the data sheet) | The larger sizes are for bigger batches |
| Continuous mixing | Continuous-cycle mixer | Produces without interrupting the flow of the mix |
| Premix from a silo | Silo mixer | Connects to the silo and prepares the mix on site |
| Mortar and concrete in quantity | Pan mixer | Sturdy machine for demanding work |
The features to look at
- Operating voltage: 220 or 230 V single-phase, or 400 V three-phase at 50 Hz. Check what you have on site before choosing. Some series exist in both versions.
- Model: M20, M25, M35, M40, M60, Polymix, Powermix. The code indicates the size of the machine: compare the data sheets for the differences.
- Weight (kg): from just over 20 kg for small mixers to over 600 kg for the largest machines. It matters in transport and positioning.
- Dimensions (mm): width, height and length range from a few tens of centimetres to over two metres on the largest machines. Measure the space available on site and the access route.
- Reversal of paddle rotation: optimises mixing and discharge.
- Water pressure (bar): for models connected to the water supply a minimum pressure of 2 or 3 bar is needed.
Think about where you will put it as well. A mixer must be positioned on level ground, close to where you work and to the water, with room to pour in the material and empty the bowl. The largest machines are hard to move: if the site changes often, weight matters too. For jobs where you mix every day, a sturdier model lasts longer than a small machine pushed to its limit.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the machine without checking the power supply. A three-phase machine does not run on a single-phase socket.
- Pouring in all the dry mix before the water. The water goes in first, then the dry mix a little at a time with the machine running.
- Not respecting the mixing time. It is the one stated on the bag.
- Putting your hands near the paddles. Hands and tools stay away from the moving parts.
- Putting off cleaning. At the end of the job, wash it straight away with water, before the mix hardens.
Frequently asked questions
Single-phase or three-phase?
It depends on the site socket. Single-phase 230 V plugs into an ordinary site socket; three-phase 400 V needs a suitable installation. Some series exist in both versions.
Which size do I need?
Choose according to how much mortar you prepare at a time. For small quantities the M25 models are enough; for crews working for long periods look at the M40, M60 or the pan mixers.
How do I use the machine?
Position it on level ground, check that the bowl or paddle is clean, pour in the water and then the dry mix a little at a time.
How do I clean it?
Straight after use, with water, before the mix hardens.
