How to choose a paddle mixer: power, speed and paddle for the mix

Tecnici AMES

The right mixer depends on what you are mixing and how much you prepare. For small quantities of adhesive, paint or resin (1-5 kg), 1,000-1,300 W is enough; for mortars and screeds of 25-50 kg you need models of 1,600-1,800 W with a double handle, adjustable speed and low rpm. The collection includes corded and cordless paddle mixers, replacement paddles and rods, with paddle diameters from 80 to 165 mm.

The types

  • Corded electric paddle mixer: the most common, running on 230 V, with power ratings from about 1,050 to 1,800 W. Examples are the Makita UT1600 and the Makita UT1200.
  • Cordless paddle mixer: no cable, for those who work where there is no mains power or want to move around freely, such as the DeWalt DCD240X2 double-handle 54 V mixer or the Makita UT001GZ01 XGT.
  • Double-handle mixer: for heavy mixes, it is held with two hands and the torque is easier to control.
  • Manual mixer: a paddle or a rod to use by hand or with a drill, for small quantities.
  • Replacement paddles and rods: in steel, also galvanised, with diameters from 80 to 165 mm and different fittings, to be chosen according to the material and the bucket.

How to choose by job

Use Recommended type Why
Mortars, screeds, skim coats in whole bags Corded, 1,600-1,800 W, double handle You need torque at low rpm to move heavy mixes (25-50 kg).
Adhesives and fillers in small buckets Corded, 1,050-1,300 W Less power is enough and the weight is lower.
Paints and resins Mixer with adjustable speed Lower rpm avoids splashes and air bubbles.
Site without a power socket Cordless, with several batteries No cable, but run time depends on the mix.
Occasional use Galvanised steel paddle on a low-speed drill Low outlay for a few mixes.

The features to look at

  • Power (W): from 1,050 to 1,800 W. Denser mixes and larger buckets mean more power.
  • No-load speed (rpm): it ranges from 0-350 to 0-950 rpm, with many models having two gears or continuous adjustment, also with ranges of 225-725. Low rpm are for mortars and adhesives; high ones for fluids.
  • Mixing capacity (kg): from 1-5 to 30-50 kg. Choose according to the largest bucket you will use.
  • Paddle diameter (mm): from 80 to 165 mm. The paddle must be in proportion to the bucket, neither too small nor touching the walls.
  • Weight (kg): from about 2.8 to 6.3 kg. The heavier it is, the more stable it is, but the more tiring if you work for a long time.
  • Power supply: corded (230 V, 50-60 Hz) or cordless.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong paddle for the material. The shape of the paddle changes the result; check on the data sheet what it is designed for.
  • Starting the machine outside the bucket. Immerse the paddle before starting, at low speed, to avoid splashing.
  • Mixing a heavy mix with one hand only. You need the double handle and a stable footing.
  • Leaving the paddle dirty. Wash it straight away at the end of the job, before the mix hardens.
  • Taking a model that is too small for the quantity. The motor overheats and the work slows down.

Frequently asked questions

Better corded or cordless?

Corded if you have a socket and do long or heavy mixes. Cordless if you move around often or there is no mains power; take run time into account.

Can I use the mixer for both paint and mortar?

Yes, if it has adjustable speed and you change the paddle. Wash it thoroughly between one material and the other.

How many watts do I need?

For adhesives and paints 1,000-1,300 W is enough; for mortars and screeds, 1,600 W or more.

Can I buy just the paddle?

Yes, the collection includes replacement paddles and rods. Check the diameter and the fitting of your machine.
