Frequently asked questions: Equipment for Waterproofing Specialists
What products do I need to waterproof a roof or a tank?
The waterproofing contractor uses bituminous primers, bituminous emulsions and osmotic cement mortars, as well as joint sealants and joint cover tapes. To complete the work you also need bentonite paste and acrylic adhesives. For roofs and flashings there are shears, riveters and leaf guards for downpipes. Choose the product according to the substrate, the exposure to water and the presence of structural movement.
Which paintable polyurethane sealant should I use for facade or terrace joints?
Paintable elastic polyurethane sealant is designed for joints subject to movement that must then be painted. Check compatibility with the substrate, because some materials need a specific primer. The joint must be clean, dry and sized according to the ratio given in the technical data sheet. Do not apply it in the rain or at temperatures outside the stated limits.
How do I waterproof a tank or a wall with osmotic mortar?
Osmotic cement mortar is applied to a damp substrate, in several thin coats, following the manufacturer's instructions. It requires a rough, clean base, free of dust and release agent residues. During curing it must be wetted for the time stated in the data sheet. The technical data sheet also specifies the number of coats and the minimum thickness to be reached.
Which primer and which bituminous emulsion should I use to waterproof a surface?
Solvent-based bituminous primer prepares the surface and improves the adhesion of subsequent coatings. Bituminous emulsion forms a membrane on concrete or masonry and is often used as a waterproofing coating. Choose the product according to the base to be treated and compatibility with the following stages. With solvents, work in ventilated areas and away from flames.
How do I choose a joint cover tape for joints subject to movement?
Elastic waterproof joint cover tape covers and protects joints where the structure moves. It should be chosen according to the width of the joint and the expected movement, that is, how much the joint opens and closes. It is applied to a clean, dry substrate, with a compatible adhesive or sealant. Check the application temperature range in the technical data sheet.
What edge protection is needed on the roof during waterproofing?
During work on roofs you need edge protection, such as temporary guardrails. The temporary aluminium guardrail for pitched roofs in the catalogue is designed for this use. D.Lgs. 81/2008 (the Italian Legislative Decree on workplace safety) regulates work at height and requires fall edges to be protected. Install the guardrails before going up on the roof and check that they are fixed as indicated by the manufacturer.
Who uses waterproofing contractor equipment, and for what work?
It is used by waterproofing contractors, sheet-metal workers, roofers and firms working on terraces, tanks, below-ground walls and facade joints. It is needed to seal, protect against water, apply membranes and fix flashings. Before starting, check the substrate and the weather conditions, and choose the system according to the intended use of the structure.
