Frequently asked questions: Deterrent Repellents
What are repellents and deterrents used for?

Repellents and deterrents are used to keep unwanted animals and insects away from gardens, outdoor areas, warehouses and work zones, without resorting to traps. Products are available as sprays, liquids or granules, ultrasonic devices, bird deterrents and repellents against mosquitoes and bugs. The right type depends on the animal to be kept away and on the environment where you need to act.

Ultrasonic device against mice and moles: does it work?

Ultrasonic devices, including solar ones, emit signals that some animals tend to avoid, and the collection includes models for mice and moles. Effectiveness varies with the species, with obstacles that attenuate the signal and with time, because animals can get used to it. Position the device following the technical data sheet and check the results after a few weeks.

Bird deterrent: which should you choose?

To keep pigeons and other birds away from balconies, window sills and roofs there are stainless steel anti-bird spikes, also in burnished finish, scarecrow balloons, reflective tapes and battery-powered devices. The anti-bird spikes stop birds from perching on flat surfaces. The balloon and the tape work through movement and light. Choose according to the surface to be protected and the duration required.

Deterrent for dogs and cats in the garden: how do you use it?

The deterrent spray for dogs and cats, such as the 600 ml size, is sprayed on the areas to be protected, for example flower beds, pots and corners where animals relieve themselves. Before use, read the label, test a small area and follow the re-application instructions. Do not spray it directly on people or animals.

Dog attack defence spray: how do you use it safely?

Anti-attack sprays, such as those for dogs or for wolves and dogs, are designed for personal defence at a distance. Keep the product within reach but away from children, use it only in the cases described on the label and do not spray it towards the face. After use, wash your hands and store the spray in a cool, dry place.

Mosquito and tick repellent: for people or animals?

There are mosquito and tick repellents designed for people and separate products for animals, such as those against fleas and ticks. Do not use an animal product on people, or vice versa, and read carefully the type of application stated. Repellents based on essential oils come with precise instructions for use that must be followed.

Mole or snake repellent: how is it applied?

For moles there are repellents to be applied in the underground tunnels, while for snakes devices such as the solar snake repeller are used. The solar device must be placed in an area that receives light during the day. Follow the technical data sheet for distribution and frequency, and remember that the effect depends on the location and the season.

Is it legal to drive away wild animals with a repellent?

Driving an animal away with a repellent is different from capturing or injuring it: wildlife is protected by national and regional laws, and some species are protected. Before acting, check the rules in your region, use only products with a clear label and data sheet and follow the instructions for use. If in doubt, ask the local council or the relevant veterinary services.
