How to choose

It depends on the type of wood, the use and the exposure: for outdoor use you need products with protection against UV rays and moisture, while indoors finish and wear resistance matter most. You then choose between a clear finish, which lets the grain show through, and an opaque one. A stain is applied before the finish, while a wax or an oil is used for ongoing maintenance.
