Professional Wood Drill Bits

196 products · Drill Bits, Cutters and Inserts

Wood drill bits are used to make holes in solid timber, blockboard, plywood and panels, both in joinery workshops and on site. In this collection you will find single bits and sets for drills and drivers, from DeWalt, Fervi, Milwaukee, Unifix, Fischer, Bossong and Makita.

Types of bit available

  • Twist drill bits for wood: for small and medium-diameter holes, also available in sets.
  • Forstner bits: for flat-bottomed holes, for example to house hinges.
  • Auger bits: with a long spiral, suited to deep holes in beams and structural timber.
  • Selfeed bits: for large-diameter holes in timber with a high-power drill.
  • Mortise bits: for cutting mortise housings.
  • Plug cutters: to make the wooden plugs that cover screw heads.

How to choose the bit

Start from the diameter of the hole and its shape: through, blind or flat-bottomed. Then check the length against the thickness of the workpiece and the shank, which must be compatible with the chuck of the drill or driver.

Tell us the diameters, quantities and the machine on which you will fit the bits: we will prepare a tailored quotation.

Frequently asked questions: Professional Wood Drill Bits
Which bit is used for drilling wood?

For wood, use twist wood bits, suitable for small and medium holes, including in sets. For flat-bottomed holes, use Forstner bits; for deep holes in beams, auger bits. Choose the type according to the depth and shape of the hole you need to make.

Forstner bit: when is it used?

The Forstner bit makes flat-bottomed holes with a clean edge, and is mainly used to house hinges and locks in furniture. It works well on solid wood and panels, with a drill at low speed. The collection includes the set of 3 Forstner wood bits in 40, 45 and 50 mm in a wooden box, and hinge cutters.

Auger bits for beams: how are they used?

Auger bits have a long spiral that removes the chips from the hole, letting you drill beams and structural timber, even to depth. The collection also includes long twist bits for drills. Use a drill at low speed and with adequate power, and withdraw the bit often to clear the chips from the hole.

DeWalt Extreme Tri Flute bits: what are they for?

DeWalt Extreme Tri Flute bits have three cutting edges and a length of 152 mm, and are used for clean, precise holes in wood and panels. They are available from 13 to 32 mm, for example the DT90239-QZ at 13 mm and the DT90245-QZ at 32 mm. The third cutting edge helps centre the hole and clear the chips.

Chrome-vanadium wood bits: who are they for?

DeWalt chrome-vanadium steel wood bits are sold as single pieces in blister packs, such as DT4506-QZ, DT4508-QZ, DT4510-QZ, DT4513-QZ and DT4516-QZ. They are practical for joinery and maintenance when an occasional hole is needed. For frequent holes and different diameters, a set is better.

How do you drill wood without splitting it?

To prevent the wood splintering on the exit side, place a piece of scrap wood underneath and drill until the bit comes through, then finish the hole from the opposite side. Use a sharp bit, steady pressure and a speed suited to the diameter. On panels and plywood this precaution is very useful.

Two-flute or twist bits: which to choose?

Two-flute bits, such as the art. 57 bit in the collection, are suitable for holes in softwood and for basic jobs. Twist wood bits have a spiral that clears the chips and produce a more regular hole. For frequent or deep holes, choose the twist bit; for occasional use the two-flute may be enough.
