Frequently asked questions: Kitchen Utensils
Which kitchen utensils do I need to prepare and store food?
The collection includes tools for preparing and cooking, such as meat mincers, food mills, graters and ravioli cutters, and containers for storage, such as airtight jars and preserving jars. It also includes the moka coffee pot, electronic kitchen scales and vacuum sealers for food. These are simple items, suitable for both the home kitchen and that of a small venue.
Which meat mincer should I choose, manual or electric?
The manual mincer, such as the Reber model, needs no power and comes apart easily for cleaning. The electric no. 5 mincer is more practical when mincing larger quantities, because the motor does the work. With both, it is best to keep the meat cold before mincing it. Take them apart straight after use and dry them well, because the steel can rust if it stays damp.
How do I choose a moka coffee pot?
The moka pots in the collection are made of aluminium and steel, from one cup upwards. Aluminium is lighter, while the steel moka pots can also be used on induction hobs, if the base allows it. Choose the size according to the number of cups you usually make, and check the gasket and replace it when it is worn. Do not press the coffee into the filter more than necessary, and wash the moka with water, without harsh detergents.
What are the risks of vacuum sealers for food?
A vacuum sealer removes the air from the bag and extends storage life, but it does not replace the refrigerator. Without air, some anaerobic bacteria can develop if the food is not kept refrigerated or frozen. Use bags suitable for food contact, as required by Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on materials intended to come into contact with food. Clean the gasket and the sealing bar after each use.
Are stoneware and ceramic jars suitable for preserving food?
Stoneware and ceramic jars for rumtopf are used to preserve food in vinegar, in oil or marinated, and fruit in alcohol. Preserving jars with an airtight seal, such as Fido and Bormioli, are designed for pantry preserves. Choose the closure according to the type of food and check that the gasket is intact. Wash them well before use and let them dry completely.
Which accessories do I need for a barbecue?
The collection includes a set of three barbecue tools in a case, useful for turning and serving grilled meat. For barbecuing it is worth having long tongs, spatulas and a grill brush, to be used while the grill is still hot. Metal tools should be washed after each use, because hardened grease is hard to remove. Keep wooden or plastic parts away from direct flame.
How do I use the ice cube tray and the asparagus steamer?
The ice cube tray is a mould for making ice cubes: you fill it with water, put it in the freezer and pop out the cubes when needed. The stainless steel asparagus steamer with basket cooks asparagus upright: the stalks sit in the water and the tips stay out, cooked by the steam. The basket can be lifted out to drain easily. Wash it straight after use, to avoid stains.
