The cabinet scraper, also called a card scraper, is a flat blade of hardened steel with sharp edges, used by joiners to smooth wood by removing very thin layers. Versions with a serrated edge remove more material and are used for rough work.

What it is for

Used for finishing surfaces, in woodworking, from cutting to finishing and for sanding wood before varnishing or finishing.

How to use it

Hold it with both hands, tilt it slightly and push or pull it along the grain, with even pressure. Do not press too hard, so as not to scratch the wood. When the blade no longer removes material, resharpen or replace it. The edges are sharp and should be handled with care.
