How to choose a chalk line: reel, box type or marker

Tecnici AMES

To mark long, straight lines on floors, walls and subfloors, the most widely used chalk line is the snapped-line type with coloured chalk: you stretch the line, lift it in the middle and let it snap. For more precise marks, on paving blocks or small areas, there are dedicated marking tools. In the collection you will find chalk lines in ABS or aluminium cases, replacement reels, chalks and markers, weighing from 0.1 to 2 kg.

Types

  • Case chalk line: the body holds the line and the chalk. Available in ABS or aluminium, also push-fit, such as the push-fit ABS case chalk line and the aluminium one. The aluminium one is stiffer, the ABS one lighter.
  • Giant chalk line: a large-size version, such as the giant chalk line in ABS case.
  • Fine-line or thick-line chalk line: the line is thinner or bolder. See the fine line and the thick line.
  • Cord reel and spare parts: the replacement cord for the guide, such as the cord reel for guide, and spare parts such as the battery cover.
  • Marking chalk and powdered chalk: refill chalk, sold in different pack sizes.
  • Marking tool: for example the Probst QuickDraw, for marking paving blocks.

How to choose for the job

Use Recommended type Why
Bricklaying, plastering and partition walls Case chalk line Long, straight lines across several walls.
Floor laying and screeds Chalk line with chalk It fills in a few seconds and can be re-marked when needed.
Block paving Marking tool for paving blocks Precise marks on the individual block.
Daily and heavy use Aluminium case or large model Withstands knocks and drops better.
Occasional use ABS case Light and easy to store.

To decide, ask yourself two questions: how long the mark must last and how long the line is. A working mark for laying a floor is wiped off with a single pass, while a mark for a pour or a cut must stay legible for hours.

What to look for

  • Case material: aluminium, ABS, polypropylene, impact-resistant plastic. Aluminium, also with rubber inserts, withstands impacts better. ABS weighs less.
  • Line: high-strength polyester, in some cases with fast rewind. Where the diameter is given, it ranges from 1.5 to 3 mm.
  • Weight: from 0.1 to 2 kg. Low weights are handy if you work all day with the chalk line in your hand.
  • Chalk colour: blue, red or green, depending on the product. Red and dark colours last longer, light ones wipe off more easily.
  • Pack size: 1, 2, 6 or 12 pieces in the data. If you use a lot of chalk, the multipack is more convenient.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong chalk. If the mark must stay, use a bolder colour. If it has to be removed, a light one.
  • Marking with a slack line. The line must be taut and lifted in the middle, otherwise the line comes out crooked.
  • Leaving the line wet. Moisture cakes the chalk. Rewind it dry and keep the case sheltered.
  • Using the same tool for everything. On paving blocks and small areas the snapped line is not the most precise solution.
  • Forgetting spares. Spare cord and chalk avoid downtime when they wear out.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chalk line accurate?

It is if the line is well stretched and the starting point is fixed. For fine precision on small elements a marking tool is better.

How do you use a chalk line?

Fill the reservoir with chalk and shake it so that the line is coated. Hook the end at the starting point, stretch it to the end point, lift it in the middle and let it snap against the surface.

Which chalk should I choose?

For temporary marks use light colours. For marks that must last, darker colours or red. Check that the chalk is compatible with your chalk line.

Aluminium or ABS case?

Aluminium is sturdier for daily use. ABS is lighter and fine for occasional use.

When is the replacement reel worthwhile?

When the cord is worn or dirty with old chalk: you replace it without changing the whole chalk line.
