What it is

Mason's line is a nylon cord or braid that is stretched between two points to mark a straight line or a reference level in masonry, floors and fencing.

What it is for

Used for levelling surfaces and structures and for setting out, in masonry work, from laying blocks to filling chases and for marking out lines, dimensions and reference points before work begins.

How to use it

Fix it at the ends with nails, pegs or line tensioners and pull it taut, so that it does not sag. Check the level with the spirit level. Check from time to time that it has not moved. The fluorescent type is easier to see outdoors.
