What it is

A long tape is a long graduated steel or fibreglass tape wound in an open or closed case with a crank handle, for measuring long distances.

What it is for

Used for measuring on site and in the workshop, for taking measurements and levels in the field and for marking out lines, dimensions and reference points before work begins.

How to use it

Fix the end ring or hook at the starting point, or have a colleague hold it, and pay out the tape in a straight line, keeping it taut. Read the measurement at the end point without the tape sagging or bending around obstacles. Rewind with the crank, wiping mud and water off the tape.
